Boulderstones Bridge, on Middlewich Road (A530) in Crewe, reopened to traffic on 23 October 2020 after a five-month project to replace it.
The railway between Crewe and Chester was closed twice, for a weekend in June when the original bridge was removed and again from 15 to 23 August 2020 as the new bridge was installed.
The road was closed for a longer period as the approach ramps had to be restored and the road service laid. Any buried utilities also had to be reinstated. The target date for reopening always was the end of October, and Network Rail has delivered on that promise.
Oluwole Osunneye, scheme project manager for Network Rail, said: “Boulderstones bridge has been rebuilt as part of a £5.7 million investment that will help to future proof the rail network in Cheshire.
“We are very grateful to motorists, passengers and the local community for their patience while this vital work was completed.”
Councillor Laura Crane, Cheshire East Council cabinet member for highways and waste, said: “It was very important to get this major route up and running again and I’m delighted that we have been able to achieve this in the midst of the pandemic.
“I am especially grateful to local residents for the patience they have shown while the road closure has been in place and for following the diversions that have been in operation.”
Network Rail worked closely with Cheshire East Council and contractor J Murphy & Sons to deliver the new bridge.
