Bombardier Transportation has delivered the first of three multi-system Traxx MS locomotives to Polish locomotive and passenger rolling stock leasing company Cargounit and freight operator Lotos Kolej.
The locomotives are authorised for operation in seven countries (Poland, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and The Netherlands). The remaining two locos are due for delivery later this month.
Speaking at the handover in Gdansk, Poland, where freight operator Lotos Kolej is based, Łukasz Boroń, CEO of Cargounit, said: “We’re pleased to offer our customers these proven Traxx locomotives, which are characterised by multiple country homologations and low operating costs.
“Adding multi-system locomotives to our fleet is a part of our core strategy, aimed at fulfilling growing demand of our customers for modern locomotives for international rail transport in Central and Eastern Europe.”
Cargounit is the largest locomotive leasing company in Central and Eastern Europe and is one of the largest locomotive leasing companies in the EU. It has almost 180 locomotives available for lease, including mainline electric locomotives and diesel shunters, as well as electric multiple units for passenger transport.
Lotos Kolej is one of the leading railway cargo carriers in Poland, with the most modern fleet of locomotives. Operating from six depots around Poland, the company also offers forwarding services, railway siding operation, rental and maintenance of rolling stock and rail tanker cleaning.
Peter Ammann, Bombardier’s head of global business development for locomotives, added: “With Cargounit being the largest Polish leasing company, we have now gained another important customer in this dynamically evolving market.
“We are committed to our locomotive business in Poland and are proud that our Traxx carbodies are produced at the Bombardier site in Wroclaw, the city where Cargounit is also based.”
Bombardier has already sold more than 240 Traxx locomotives for operation in Poland and neighbouring countries, out of a total of over 2,300 Traxx locomotives that have been sold worldwide over the last 20 years. That total includes over 600 multi-system locomotives, which, designed to operate on Europe’s four main rail supply voltages, provide the necessary flexibility and interoperability to manage international rail transport across Europe.
