The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) is investigating a near miss in which a track worker narrowly missed being hit by a train near Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.
The details are that, at around 16:28 on 16 June 2020, a passenger train, travelling from London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street, came close to striking a track worker just north of Leighton Buzzard station. The track worker was undertaking a vegetation survey on behalf of a contractor. No one was injured.
The track worker, who was standing under a bridge in an area of limited clearance, appears to have been within two metres of the track and therefore not in a position of safety.
RAIB has undertaken a preliminary examination into the circumstances surrounding this incident and, having assessed the evidence which has been gathered to date, has decided to publish a safety digest. This will be published on RAIB’s website in the next few weeks.
