The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) will be investigating a fatal accident that occurred at London Waterloo underground station on Tuesday 26 May 2020.

At about 10:11 that morning, a passenger fell between the platform edge and the stationary northbound Bakerloo line train from which they had just alighted. They suffered fatal injuries as the train subsequently started moving and departed from the platform.

The RAIB’s investigation will seek to identify the sequence of events, investigate the supervision of the platform-train interface and consider any relevant underlying factors.

RAIB investigations are independent of any other inquiries by the railway industry, the British Transport Police or by the industry’s regulator, the Office of Rail and Road. They seek to establish the causes of accidents and to make recommendations to improve safety for the future.
