Bombardier signs new logistics and support contract for Trenitallia ETR500 fleet

Trenitalia's ETR500 fleet will be supported by an integrated logistics contract with Bombardier Transportation.

Bombardier Transportation has signed a new contract with Italian state operator Trenitalia to support its fleet of ETR500 very high-speed trains with integrated logistics services. The initial contract is for six years, with an option to extend it for a further six years.

The 58 ETR500 very high-speed electric multiple units were manufactured by a consortium of Bombardier, Alstom and AnsaldoBreda (now Hitachi Rail). They have been in service in Italy since the mid-1990s and have been operating under Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa (red arrow) brand since 2008.

The Trenitalia ETR500 fleet has been in service, in one guise or another, since 1992.

Under this new logistics contract, Bombardier is undertaking to supply a range of around 120 different items, including critical components such as traction cooling equipment and transformers, to Trenitalia within a 48 hours timeframe, including new, repaired and overhauled items.

Franco Beretta,
Bombardier Transportation Italy.

Franco Beretta, president and managing director of Bombardier Transportation Italy, said, “We are very pleased to continue our long-term collaboration with our customer Trenitalia with this new agreement for integrated logistics support services. This tailored contract will ensure continuous availability of consumable spare parts and repairable components for the ETR500 Frecciarossa fleet.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to express my thanks to Italy’s rail industry, especially our Bombardier employees, as they play their part in supporting our nation during these unprecedented times.”

Bombardier Transportation employs approximately 700 people in Italy at its Vado Ligure production site, its signalling base in Rome and at service depots throughout the country – there is also a team based at Rome Fiumicino airport.

In addition to manufacturing, and now supporting, the ETR500 fleet, Bombardier has extensive experience of delivering high-speed rail technology in Italy, most recently as a leading supplier to the V300 Zefiro high speed trains, known in Italy as the Frecciarossa 1000, developed together with Hitachi Rail.

Bombardier also played a major part in developing and manufacturing Italy’s newest high-speed train, the Frecciarossa 1000.
