The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has launched an investigation into a fatal accident that took place at Eden Park station, Bromley, southeast London on Wednesday 26 February 2020.
At about 19:05, a man fell from the edge of a platform at Eden Park station and was struck almost immediately afterwards by a train operating the 19:00 Hayes to London Charing Cross passenger service.
Local reports suggest that the man was visually impaired and had appeared confused after two trains arrived at the station at almost the same time. There are suggestions that the door sounder from the train on the other platform may have suggested that his train was ready for boarding.
In common with many British mainline stations, the platform edge was not equipped with a tactile surface designed to warn people with impaired vision when they are near the edge.
RAIB’s investigation will aim to identify the sequence of events which led to the accident, and consider factors relating to the provision of tactile surfaces on station platforms and any relevant underlying factors.
The RAIB’s findings, including any recommendations to improve safety, will be published at the conclusion of the investigation, a process that typically takes 10 months.
