The 1903 station building at Bricket Wood, on the Watford to St Albans Abbey branch line, has opened to the public as a tea room, having been closed and bricked up in the 1960s.
Taken over by the Bricket Wood Station Heritage Trust as a dark, empty space, hard work by a number of people, including award-winning designer Sheldon Peever Studio, has transformed the building. Windows have gone back in, modern fittings and services have been installed and the whole place is now looking spotless.
Funding for the project was provided by was London Northwestern Railway’s Customer and Communities Improvement Fund (£250,000) and the Railway Heritage Trust (£67,000).
On opening day, Wednesday 2 August, some 200 people, most of them locals, attended to take in the atmosphere of an Edwardian station and to sample the excellent tea and cake provided by local businesswoman Cheryl Clark, the operating partner for the station.
The sparkling new tea room is open Wednesdays to Saturdays, from 09:00 until 15:00.
