Railpool orders 50 Traxx locos from Alstom

Railpool has ordered 50 Traxx Universal locomotives from Alstom in a contract worth up to €260 million

Railpool, one of Europe’s leading rail vehicle leasing companies, has signed a contract worth up to  €260 million (£225 million) with Alstom for the supply of 50 Traxx Universal multi-purpose locomotives.

The locomotives, which can be used to haul both passenger and freight trains, will be able to operate in eight countries – Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Belgium, Luxemburg and Poland.

All of the locomotives will be equipped with Atlas, Alstom’s onboard system for digital in-cab signalling using the European Train Control System (ETCS). This will enables operation on a number of rail corridors and will facilitate cross-border operation.

“All 50 locomotives ordered from our partner Alstom will cover operations in France and along the most important European corridors, contributing to the further advancement of sustainable high-performance rail transportation out of France.”

Designed in Mannheim, Germany, the locomotives will be assembled in Kassel, Germany using components from Alstom plants in Wroclaw, Poland (bodyshells), Siegen, Germany (bogies), and Zurich, Switzerland (project management).
