Škoda Group to supply traction motors for Australia’s new Alstom trams

Alstom’s new tram fleet for Melbourne, Australia, will be powered by traction motors supplied by Škoda Group in a deal worth up to €13 million to the Czech manufacturer.

The first tranche of 400 motors will be used to power 100 trams, for delivery between 2024 and 2028. The contract includes an option to supply a further 720 motors.

Based on the successful Škoda FCX range of motors, the traction motor to be used in Melbourne will be longitudinally mounted with an output of 105kW and a weight of 360kg. It will drive the tram axle via a two-speed gearbox.

This will be Škoda’s first order for the Australian market.
