Hitachi Rail awarded eight-year contract to maintain TransPennine Express Nova 1 fleet

Hitachi Rail has been awarded a new contract to maintain the Nova 1 fleet for Transpennine Express

Hitachi Rail’s has been awarded an eight-year contract by TransPennine Trains Limited and Angel Trains to maintain their 19 ‘Nova 1’ intercity Class 802 trains. Worth £240 million, the new contract will help retain over 550 jobs in depots across the North of England and Scotland.

Introduced in 2019, the Nova 1 fleet has provided an extra 161 seats per train on TransPennine Express journeys between Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Edinburgh. The Hitachi Rail built trains have also displayed impressive maintenance and reliability, with the fleet currently 70% more reliable than the industry average.

Hitachi Rail’s chief director for UK & Ireland Jim Brewin said: “This contract is recognition of Hitachi Rail’s incredible maintenance team, and positive collaboration between TransPennine Express, Angel Trains and Hitachi Rail.

“We will continue to invest and work tirelessly so the Nova 1 fleet goes from strength to strength.”
