Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has entered into a framework agreement with UK Power Networks Services to renew and upgrade Manchester Metrolink’s electrical infrastructure.
Under the framework, UK Power Networks Services is currently working on a seven-month programme to inspect and replace electrical equipment, design digital signals and assess the current fibre-optic communications at electricity substations. The company is drawing on its experience of running London Underground and Network Rail infrastructure to deliver the project with the minimum of disruption to tram services and the community.
Although Manchester Metrolink is already one of the most sustainable modes of transport in Greater Manchester – the trams are powered by renewable and green energy sources with no harmful emissions, and each can carry more than 200 passengers – these investment and upgrade works aim to meet Greater Manchester’s continuing sustainability ambitions for a cleaner, greener and more prosperous city region.
Greater Manchester’s population has risen to 2.8 million people. The electrical upgrade will ensure that the tram system continues to meet the city’s economic growth ambitions by supporting a fully integrated, high-capacity tram system across Greater Manchester that’s also environmentally sustainable forms part of that ambition.
Lee Maxwell, head of client delivery (North) of UK Power Networks Services, said: “We are delighted to support Transport for Greater Manchester’s vision in shaping a greener and cleaner city and region.
“Partnering with TfGM means that we will contribute towards their sustainability ambitions while supporting our growth and investment in the north of England. It demonstrates our commitment to the region in addition to our industry-leading work at Manchester Airport.”
