Germany’s railway infrastructure manager, DB Netz, has chosen Harsco Rail to supply up to 56 catenary intervention and maintenance vehicles for the German railway system.
This seven-year contract, the first ever between Harsco Rail and DB Netz, has a total value of $290 million.
The initial order placed as part of this agreement is for 16 vehicles, with delivery starting from 2022. It is likely that a further seven machines will follow, two years later.
DB Netz, Europe’s largest infrastructure manager, wishes to replace its existing, aging fleet with modern equipment that is compatible with its current needs.
Harsco’s diesel-electric Utility Track Vehicles (UTVs) can operate on electric traction off the overhead catenary and can also run for up to two hours without any external power supply, using just their onboard batteries.
The new machines will include other, environmentally friendly features including an air-conditioning unit cooled by a natural refrigerant.
