Two of GR Railfreight’s fleet of Class 66 locomotives have been named after long-serving members of the company’s staff in a ceremony at Cleethorpes.
This continues a company tradition of naming locomotives after the key women who contribute to GBRf’s continuing success.
The naming of ‘Maria’ and ‘Amanda’ took place when a special service from Doncaster called in at Cleethorpes for a ceremony conducted by managing director John Smith.
Both recipients of the honour were present at the naming. Maria Dennison is an assistant train manager, based at Peterborough, who joined GBRf in 2003, while Amanda Wilson – business manager, bulk services – started with the company in 2012. Maria and Amanda were presented with commemorative replicas of the locomotives and the name plaques that now adorn them.
After the naming ceremony, John Smith commented: “Both Amanda and Maria are hugely valued members of the team and it was my pleasure to name two locomotives after them. Our staff are the lifeblood of GB Railfreight and we are delighted to be able to recognise their contribution to our success in this way.
“It is a longstanding GBRf tradition to name locomotives after some of our most hardworking female members of staff and, apart from celebrating their hard work, it is also a sign of the diverse makeup of our workforce – something we are incredibly proud of.”
