Mick Rayner, managing director of Balfour Beatty’s rail business, Rayner has been appointed to the RSSB Board as an Industry Non-Executive Director.

The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) is the independent safety, standards, and research body for Great Britain’s railways. It works to improve safety, efficiency, customer satisfaction, and sustainability across the evolving rail network, with a focus on reducing industry costs and supporting freight growth.

The RSSB Board is responsible for the effective oversight of the company, agreeing the strategic direction and governance structure to ensure long-term success and deliver stakeholder value. The Board includes executive and non-executive directors from across the rail industry and outside of it. Mick Rayner becomes the twelfth Board member and will represent infrastructure contractors.

Before Mick was appointed to lead Balfour Beatty’s rail business in 2019, he had led various companies within the group for over 20 years. Prior to this, he was director of safety and quality, focusing on management system improvements. He has worked in the UK, Germany, Italy, and Scandinavia.

Commenting on Mick’s appointment, RSSB interim chair David Jordan said: “I’m delighted that Mick has joined the Board, bringing his wealth of experience from senior roles within the infrastructure contracting sector.

“Mick’s insights and challenge will help RSSB as we work to support the rail industry.”

Mick has extensive experience leading serious accident investigations. This gives him insight into complex issues and cultural factors crucial for improving safety and business performance. He started his career as an apprentice building rolling stock and has held roles at all levels up to managing director.
