Siemens India has won major signalling and telecommunications contracts for Nagpur Metro Rail Phase 2.

The Mobility Business of Siemens Limited, the Mumbai-based Indian subsidiary of Siemens AG, has been awarded two separate contracts by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation, which is 50:50 jointly owned by the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra.

Maharashtra, which lies on the western coast of India with Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh to the north and Karnataka and Goa to the south, has Mumbai (formerly Bombay) as its capital. It is the second-most populous state and has the largest economy in India.

The two contracts cover the design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling technology for the Nagpur Metro Rail Project Phase 2 (with augmentation of Phase 1), and for advanced telecommunication technologies for the same phase. The combined value is Rs773 crore (£66.7 million) and the total time frame for project delivery is approximately 42 months.

Nagpur Metro Rail Project Phase 2 will extend the existing metro network by 43.8km, connecting satellite towns and underserved areas to the city. It includes four extensions to the two Phase 1 corridors, with a total of 32 stations. The new CBTC signalling system aims to achieve punctuality close to 100%, energy savings and optimized headways while ensuring the highest level of safety across the metro network.
