Network Rail has awarded three-year contracts worth a total of £200 million to 13 companies for the delivery of buildings and civils work across its Southern region, which spans Kent, Sussex and the South of England.
The contracts started at the end of November 2020 and cover upgrades to station canopies and platforms, footbridges, earthworks (including drainage and repairs when there has been a landslip), rewiring at stations, lift and escalator renewals and station information systems.
The companies selected have shown themselves to be leaders in innovation and sustainability and were able to demonstrate a proven track record of delivering social value across the communities in which they work.
The 15 work packages are split between:
- A single buildings and civils generalist with the ability to bid for all works tendered under the framework;
- A single buildings generalist with the ability to bid for all buildings works tendered under the framework;
- A single civils generalist with the ability to bid for all civils works tendered under the framework;
- Two specialists for each of the six sub-disciplines (total of 12 specialists).
The managing director of Network Rail’s Southern region, John Halsall, said: “We have chosen suppliers to allow us to deliver vital new infrastructure and support the overall aims of providing a safe, reliable and efficient railway for passengers.”
The successful companies are:
- General building and civils: Balfour Beatty Rail; VolkerFitzpatrick; Amalgamated Construction
- Mechanical and engineering specialist: B & M McHugh; Quinn Infrastructure Services
- Fabric specialist: BCM Construction; Lundy Projects
- Footbridges specialist: Nationwide Rail; Taziker Industrial
- Metallic structures specialist: Dyer and Butler; Freyssinet
- Earthworks specialist: Dyer and Butler; Taziker Industrial
- Masonry and concrete specialist: Nationwide Rail; Kier Integrated Services
Kevin Bennett, project director for Freyssinet, which has a share of the Metallic Structures contract, said: “We are tremendously pleased to be entrusted with this framework.
“It builds on the great innovative engineering we delivered at recent contracts on East-West Rail and Glasgow Subway, as well as a host of bridge refurbishment and structure strengthening schemes across the UK.”
Another of the 13 successful bidders that will share the 15 work packages (Dyer & Butler and Taziker each won two) was Kier Utilities & Rail, which was successful in concrete and masonry.
Commenting on the news of Kier’s success, group managing director Barry McNicholas stated: “We are delighted to have secured a place on this framework and build on our partnership with Network Rail which will allow us to deliver vital new infrastructure and support the overall aims of providing a safe, reliable and efficient railway.
“We have vast experience of delivering quality rail projects and through this appointment our talented and diverse teams will deliver vital new works in a sustainable way across the south of England.”
