A new bridge in Northamptonshire, completed in November 2019, needs some repair work and will be closed to road traffic for two weeks in October.
The bridge that carries Station Road over the Midland main line in Isham, on the outskirts of Kettering in Northamptonshire, was demolished and rebuilt with additional clearance as part of the £1.5 billion project to electrify the railway from London to Corby.
Now, however, cracks have appeared in the pavement due to the hot weather over the last few months, and Network Rail engineers also want to make some improvements to the drainage.
This work will not affect train services, but Station Road will be closed to road vehicles for two weeks to allow the improvements to take place safely. Access over the bridge will be maintained for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists.
Gavin Crook, principal programme sponsor for Network Rail, said: “This work to improve the pavement and the drainage on Station Road bridge is vital so drivers, cyclists and pedestrians can continue using it for years to come.
“These improvements can only be carried out safely when the road is closed, and we would like to apologise to residents and businesses in Isham for any inconvenience.”
Once the road re-opens, teams will remain on site until December. Network Rail has pledged to keep disruption to a minimum for people who live near the railway.
