To mark National Inclusion Week 2020, South Western Railway has reaffirmed its commitment to encouraging greater diversity amongst its workforce by running three dedicated services – each staffed respectively by female, LGBT+ and BAME employees.
The LGBT+ team crewed the SWR Pride Train, fondly known as ‘Trainbow’.
The female crew ran an SWR service from London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour, as did the BAME crew, while the LGBT+ crew staffed a service to Southampton Central.
SWR managing director Mark Hopwood commented: “Like many organisations and industries, there is work to be done on the railway to ensure it becomes a truly diverse workplace, representative of the communities we serve.
“The railway is a wonderful place to work, learn and develop your career – for everyone.
“It is important during this week that we celebrate our workforce and the progress we have made as an inclusive employer, but it is more important that we focus on continuous improvement the other 51 weeks of the year.”
National Inclusion Week ran from 28 September to 4 October 2020. It was organised by Inclusive Employers, the UK’s first and leading membership organisation for employers looking to build inclusive workplaces. Inclusive Employers offers consultancy, training and thought leadership, to help employers make inclusion an everyday reality at their place of work.
