The Brent Cross West station project is part of an ambitious urban regeneration plan for the wider Brent Cross area. Led by Barnet Council, it involves the construction of a new railway station that will be linked to the nearby Brent Cross South scheme and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2022.
Brent Cross Cricklewood is one of the biggest regeneration programmes in London. Intended to turn the area into North London’s top destination for living, leisure, retail and business, it is transforming the area with a vibrant new town centre, 7,500 new homes, three million square feet of commercial space and new retail, leisure and cultural venues.
The development will be supported by excellent new transport links with the new Brent Cross West station, improved walking and cycling routes, new green spaces and parks.
Mace, the international consultancy and construction company, has been selected to provide project management services for the project. The company will manage a broad scope of activities associated with the station’s development, including the relocation of existing rail operations offices and welfare facilities, the realignment of the existing railway and creation of railway sidings and the construction of the new five-platform railway station at Brent Cross West.
As project manager for the scheme, Mace will also be responsible for overseeing all planning, integration and construction, implementing a programme controls function, securing and issuing all notices and approvals, assurance of contractor performance and commercial and contract management.
A 30-strong Mace team will deliver the services, working hand-in-hand with Barnet Council and other key partners, including the main contractor leading on the station’s construction, VolkerFitzpatrick, and designer WSP.
In addition, Mace will be responsible for developing a collaborative working relationship with Network Rail to ensure coordination of different workstreams.
Councillor Daniel Thomas, Leader of Barnet Council, said: “We are pleased to be working with Mace to project manage the station programme through to completion in 2022, when the new Brent Cross West Station will connect both new and existing communities to the heart of London in under 15 minutes.”
Jason Millett, Mace chief executive officer for consultancy, said: “With the Prime Minister calling for infrastructure to form the backbone of the UK’s economic recovery, flagship schemes like the new Brent Cross West Station are critical to proving our industry is able to deliver.
“Securing this role enhances Mace’s reputation as a leading consultant in the rail sector, adding to a portfolio that includes the new HS2 Euston Station, and marks another important win in our efforts to step up and meet the government’s requests.”
Mace’s director of transportation, Sean Gray, added: “This win is a clear signal of our intent in the rail sector.
“I’m delighted to be working with Barnet Council on this exciting scheme, which is crucial to unlocking wider development opportunities and providing a quick and reliable rail service into and out of Central London.
“In the context of Project Speed (the government’s recently announced infrastructure programme), the team and I are particularly looking forward to bringing our knowledge and experience from other major station developments to help drive efficiencies across the project’s timeline.”
