Colin Wood is to take over as chief executive officer of AECOM in the UK, following the resignation of both current CEO David Barwell and chief operating officer Bill Quarterman.
Both Barwell and Quarterman posted their resignations through Companies House on Friday 31 July 2020, dated the previous day.
Colin Wood MBE joined AECOM in June 2017 as managing director for transportation in the UK and Ireland, following executive roles with the Ministry of Defence, Capita and Transport for London, where he was responsible for ensuring TfL operational business units were ready and able to deliver successful operations for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
More recently, he became chief capability officer for Europe, Middle East & Africa, ensuring that AECOM’s 18,000-strong team in those regions provide the full range of building, design, operations, maintenance, programme management and advisory capabilities that enable the company to partner with its clients in delivering “innovative infrastructure solutions”.
David Barwell joined AECOM in 2000 as national manager for rail for Australia and New Zealand. Although he started his career with Halcrow in the UK, he was already in Australia, working for Maunsell as transportation manager in New South Wales.
He then moved to the Middle East for seven years as chief executive of that business before finally joining AECOM’s London-based team in 2017, becoming chief executive of UK and Ireland in September of that year.
Bill Quarterman also spent time in the Middle East with AECOM, as senior vice-president for finance, before transferring to London as COO in May 2018. A graduate of Oxford Brookes University, he held various finance roles with Unipart, Bovis Lend Lease and Galliford Try before joining AECOM in 2012.
AECOM is busy in the rail sector in the UK. It has a contract with Network Rail to support the delivery of work within its Safety, Technical and Engineering (STE) Strategic Plan over Control Period 6 (2019-2024). It also has a national multi-disciplinary design framework with Network Rail, as well as individual track design contracts in the South West, North West and Scotland.
Working with Colas Rail as part of the Rail Systems Alliance, AECOM is also contracted to deliver rail system works, including track renewals, signalling, electrification and civils works, in the south of England.
