A new fleet of 25 Prolectric ProLight solar lighting towers has been purchased by Sunbelt Rental Rail – the new name for A-Plant Rail – to provide a silent, clean, carbon-free off-grid solution to temporary lighting for rail schemes.
A-Plant Rail will change its name to Sunbelt Rail Rentals on 1 June 2020. This change brings the UK business into alignment with the North American business of Ashtead Group plc, which already trades successfully under the Sunbelt Rentals brand.
Currently, the group trades under 19 different brand names, of which A-Plant Rail is one. Now, all operations will be brought under one clear brand to make it better, faster and easier for customers to access the group’s wide range of specialist products and services.

The new ProLight solar lighting towers do not require fuel and their digital inbuilt remote-control function allow operators to alter the settings remotely, storing key data that can be monitored or evaluated over time.
Each trailer-mounted unit is fitted with heavy-duty, deep-cycle batteries, an array of three or four 330W solar panels, a 7.5-metre telescopic mast and four LED lights which are capable of 550 square metres of coverage at a minimum lux level of 20 and 10,000 to 40,000 lumens output.
The ProLight’s high-power 1,320W capacity is three times that of any other temporary solar tower light on the market. Even on winter days, with 16 hours of darkness, the unit operates consistently and reliably. The ProLight’s performance can also be monitored remotely, so, if the system is running low on battery capacity, a maintenance team can quickly respond to rectify matters on site.
The new lighting towers are some of the earliest additions to the Sunbelt Rental Rail fleet under its new name and were purchased in support of Network Rail’s CP6 target to reduce non-traction energy consumption by almost 20 per cent and carbon emissions by 25 per cent.
The high-performance lighting towers will be used to illuminate rail work site as well as access roads, welfare cabin areas and car parking.
Paul Price, director of rail at Sunbelt Rentals, said: “There’s no doubt these new technologies are going to be a complete game changer for our industry and we need to push on to get to a place where using this type of technology is just the norm.
“The environmental impact of running diesel tower lights all night on large-scale sites is no longer sustainable. It’s not just about carbon emissions; Network Rail’s lineside neighbours are also very important to us and by using solar harvesting, we’re not polluting their environment with unwelcome fumes and noise.
“The demand for sustainable, lower carbon producing tower lighting has increased in recent years and Sunbelt are delighted to offer the biggest fleet in the country. We’ve made an initial investment of 25 units, with plans to purchase further stock later this year, we anticipate that these solar lighting towers will be a prominent offering in our fleet soon.”
