Walking for NHS – TPE manager attempts 150,000 steps in one day

Ready for the off - Dan Damarell ready to face his 150,000 step challenge.

Dan Damarell, a performance delivery manager at TransPennine Express’ (TPE), has raised over £2,000 for NHS charities after embarking on an ambitious task to walk 150,000 steps in a day.

Like many around the UK, he was inspired by Captain Tom Moore, who walked around his garden, hoping to raise £500,00 for NHS charities, and actually raised over £32 million!

So, Dan set out on Captain Tom’s birthday (Thursday 30 April) to try and achieve his target, walking in and around Liverpool.

Unfortunately Dan had to finish the day on crutches,
but still managed 112,000 steps in one day.

Dan commented: “I saw a video on social media of someone in America doing 100,000 steps in a day and thought why not take it one further by attempting 150,000. I mentioned it to one of my best mates, Tom, and he was onboard straight away.

“It is a great opportunity to stay challenged during the current lockdown, as well as fundraising for the heroes keeping our country going at the moment; the NHS staff and volunteers.”

Dan set out on his mission of 150,000 steps early in the morning, completing 25,000 before 7am. However, the feat proved to a bit more ambitious then he realised, and unfortunately, he came up short of his target. Still, he managed to walk an astounding 112,000, completing 43,000 of them on crutches, while raising £2,400 so far.

Dan added: “I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated or supported me in my 150,000-step challenge. It kept going until the end!

“In hindsight, I’m not even sure 150,000 steps in one day is possible, but I gave it a good go! The most important thing is the amount of money that has been raised for the NHS COVID-19 appeal.”
