PT Kereta Indonesia (PT KAI) has signed a contract with Progress Rail for 36 new EMD® GT38AC freight locomotives to enlarge its fleet. They will join 55 other GT38AC locomotives which have been running PT KAI’s South Sumatra coal haulage operations since 2011.
Manufactured by ElectroMotive Diesel (EMD), the company that built the Class 66 locomotives for the UK, the GT38AC was designed specifically for Southeastern Asian and Sub-Saharan African environments. The locomotive features an eight-cylinder EMD 710 diesel engine and AC traction, along with a cab and car body designed for improved visibility.
Marty Haycraft, president and CEO of Progress Rail, said: “We welcome the opportunity to once again work with PT KAI, delivering another wave of our GT Series locomotives, which have demonstrated strong performance, reliability and efficiency in global service.
“We look forward to continuing to support PT KAI with our broad solutions to help them achieve their operational goals.”
Delivery of the locomotives is expected to be in late 2021.
