Work to repair the Gospel Oak to Barking line is continuing after a derailed freight wagon caused extensive damage on Thursday 23 January.
The damage stretched over two and a half miles of the route, between Leyton Midland Road and Walthamstow Queens Road. After assessment, Network Rail engineers estimated that they will need to replace:
- 39 lengths of rail, each 216 metres long;
- 5,300 concrete sleepers;
- 900 wooden sleepers;
- 10,000 tonnes of ballast;
- Custom-made longitudinal timbers on 10 bridges.
The repair work is complicated and is expected to take a number of weeks, with the line partly closed for that time.
The London Overground service between Barking and South Tottenham has been suspended. A rail replacement bus service has been provided between Walthamstow Central and Barking calling at Leyton Midland Road, Leytonstone High Road (Harrow Green), Wanstead Park and Woodgrange Park to allow passengers to complete their journey while repairs are underway.
