Who’s buying?

Barbour ABI has released its Infrastructure contract value league tables.

The construction industry is having a quiet time at present – it’s not just rail.

But the lack of contracts coming out of Network Rail is certainly noticeable.

Those are the two headlines to be taken from the latest Barbour ABI Top-50 League Tables that were published on 6 December 2019.

Granted, the tables cover the entire construction industry, but it is still interesting to see who is doing well, and who isn’t.

Taking the 12-month rolling totals, to smooth out the peaks and troughs that occur on a monthly basis, Galliford Try comes out on top, having won 87 contracts over the last 12 months, worth a total of £1,761 million. Of course, that’s not all rail, but there will be some in there.

By complete contrast, number two on the list is the Mace Dragados joint venture that has been awarded the HS2 contract to develop Euston station.  Its only one contract, as opposed to Galliford Try’s 87, but its worth £1,650 million on its own. HS2 does have a distorting effect on the figures.

Other well-known names are on the list. Balfour Beatty is fifth, Kier is seventh, Morgan Sindall is 13th, Buckingham Group 21st, Alun Griffiths 30th and Siemens 37th.

Clients

There is also a 12-month table for clients.  HS2 is top – only three contracts placed but worth £2,661 million!

Highways England is third, while Network Rail is eighth, below Esso Petroleum and University College London, with 95 contracts placed for a total of £568 million. This from a company with over £50 BILLION to spend in five years – they placed only one-tenth of that in the last 12 months.

Worryingly, on the list of the top 50 contract values placed in the month of November, Network Rail doesn’t appear at all, having placed less than £20 million in contracts in November 2019.

These figures are, of course, only as accurate as Barbour ABI’s research makes them. But they make interesting reading…
