The project to improve access at Cadoxton station has reached a major milestone.
The station, which is on the Barry branch about six miles southwest of Cardiff, is being improved as part of the Access for all programme. This work includes the construction of a new footbridge, complete with lifts, crossing the tracks and connecting the two platforms.
Over four weekends in August and September 2019, Network Rail engineers and principal contractor Alun Griffiths successfully lifted in the new footbridge, lift towers and support columns a large crane, which was located within the station car park each weekend.
Rhys Howells, scheme project manager at Network Rail said: “We would like to thank passengers and the local community for their patience throughout these essential works.
“Once complete, the new footbridge and lifts will benefit those with reduced mobility as well as passengers with children, heavy luggage or shopping.”
Further night-time and weekend work is expected to take place until mid-November.
The work is part of the £3 million ‘Access for All’ project, funded by the Department for Transport, with match funding from Welsh Government. The funding is used to create an obstacle free, accessible route from the station entrance to the platform.
Barry station, on the same line, is set to benefit from this funding next year.
James Price, the Transport for Wales chief executive office, said: “It’s great to see work progressing through the ‘Access for All’ programme. In addition to this, Transport for Wales are investing £194 million in station improvements throughout our Wales and Borders network, including the building of at least five new stations. We will spend £15 million on making our stations more accessible, which will further improve the customer experience and help us create a transport network that people can be proud of.”
