The first of 30 new trains being supplied by Alstom for Lyon’s line B metro has arrived at the La Poudrette depot, having covered 5,000km during more than five months of testing at Valenciennes.
It will now start dynamic night-time tests on the Lyon network at the end of May 2019.
The new trains are the latest of Alstom’s rubber-tyred metros, a design which is constantly being improved following feedback from customers.
Each train, which is 36 metres long and can carry more than 300 passengers, features wide aisles and doors, a low floor throughout, and an open interior allowing passengers to circulate from one carriage to another during the journey.
For passenger comfort, the new trains feature large bay windows, LED lighting, comfortable seats, passenger information screens and air conditioning. The latest technological advances will also increase availability, operational flexibility and ease of maintenance.
In addition to the trains, Alstom is supplying its Urbalis 400 automatic train operation system, already deployed on more than 1,000 kilometres of metro lines worldwide to enable driverless operation, to increase the capacity of line B which first went into service on 2 May 1978 and has been extended several times since then.
Alstom France president Jean-Baptiste Eyméoud said: “Alstom is proud to present this first next-generation metro train, which addresses the pressing mobility issues faced by SYTRAL, our customer and long-standing partner.”
